Who Is Top Of The Chainsaw Tree?

!±8± Who Is Top Of The Chainsaw Tree?

Stihl has long been at the top of the chainsaw tree although many would argue that Husqvarna is right there with it. It's an interesting rivalry with both brands having their loyal band of followers.

2006 has been a productive year for Stihl who have confirmed their status in the world of chainsaws with recognition in the October edition of Consumers Digest. No less than four of it's chainsaws received "Best Buy" commendations which is no mean feat considering the magazine doesn't hand out these type of accolades lightly.

Stihl's Innovation

One of the major reason's that Stihl has remained top of the tree is it's ability to continually usurp technology and come up with outstanding innovations. One of these is what they call the Easy2Start feature which makes starting the world's most dangerous power tool an effortless exercise. In fact, it's suggested that just about anyone can start a chainsaw with this feature although for good safety practice, it might be a good idea to let the kids keep playing with the toy models.

Husqvarna: Looking To The Future

Meanwhile, Husqvarna isn't laying idle in it's endeavours to stay stride-for-stride with Stihl in the chainsaws race. It also has smart start technology which from a chainsaw users point-of-view is "just what the doctor ordered." Why? Well, when dealing with such a volatile and dangerous power tool as a chainsaw, the less effort one has to expend in operating it the safer it is.

Husqvarna recently announced one of it's new breed of chainsaws designed for the homeowner market simply called the 240. One of the features of this machine, due for release next year, is it's excellent anti-vibration system which again, gets into the area of user comfort. Fatigue is a dangerous hazard in the use of any large power tool but more so with chainsaws. In the past, large vibrating chainsaws meant the operator was continually expending vital energy in maintaining his machine at a smooth a level as possible but in doing so, fatigue and tiredness would creep in which would ultimately lead to carelessness and accidents in many instances.

Producing Better Chainsaws

It's interesting to see the larger companies now producing machines aimed at the homeowners. Chainsaws were once the domain of the professional lumberjack but with technology evolving at a rapid rate, particularly during the last decade, smaller, yet powerful chainsaws are being produced. This has seen a virtually untapped market emerge in the shape of the non-professional user and manufacturers have been quick to seize the initiative and cater to them.

The big players like Stihl and Husqvarna will continue to go neck-and-neck in their endeavours to remain in front which means only one thing; consumers will reap the benefits through increased and better technology.

Useful Tips in Buying Weed Eaters

!±8± Useful Tips in Buying Weed Eaters

A Weed eater is also recognized as weed whackers or string trimmers, which are also popular garden care items. It is usually utilized as a type of edger's or hedge trimmers that helps maintain the grass being trimmed in sidewalks. This also keeps the grass in the yard trimmed and free of weeds.

Most of the weed eaters have a long streak of string at a single end, with the handle at the other end. The spinning string of these weed eaters are responsible for cutting grass.

Weeds eaters do not require much maintenance. It should just be kept clean all the time to make it last longer. Basic weed eaters have air filters, edger blades, electrical parts, fuel filters, starter parts, throttle control, and trimmer line.

Weeds eaters are powered by gasoline. They have a big advantage because it is powerful. It is ideal for cutting down thick grasses or clearing away vines. Most of the Stihl brands of weed eaters available in the market are powered by gas.

Tips in Buying Weed Eaters
Most weed eaters look the same. The most important thing you could consider when buying is the power of each model.

Weeds eaters can be electric or battery powered. They can also be powered by gas or a mixture of gas and oil. Electric weed eaters are a nice option because it is easy to start. Just plug it in. The only problem is procuring a long extension cord if you have a big backyard.

Most electric-powered weed eaters are lightweight and easy to use. The 12-inch cutting path eater also offers precise maneuverability, especially for use in shrubs and plants. It is also great for cutting grass for small yards, townhouses and condos. This weed eater also offers adjustable handles, a comfortable ergonomic design and an extension cord retainer.

The 16 inch 31 cc gas powered weed eater offers dual cut blades for cutting thick grass and big grass. It is ideal for trimming around long stretches or around the water. The cushioned handle offers optimal control and comfort for your hand.

When you are choosing your weed eater blades, you have a choice between plastic blades or a nylon cord. Both of these weed eater blades are effective and fairly inexpensive. The plastic blades can be break easily, particularly if it is ground up against the driveway. The problem with nylon cords is that you need frequent replacement during each usage.

Generally, weed eaters with high power can get a job done more efficiently and quickly. But you don't need the most advanced model, especially if you are budgeted and have a small backyard only.

Do You Know How To Measure A Chain Saw Blade And Chain?

!±8± Do You Know How To Measure A Chain Saw Blade And Chain?

Is your chainsaw starting to seem dull and not perform as well? Looks like it's time to replace the chain. In order to do this, you will need to know the length of both the chainsaw blade as well as the length and size of your chain. If you've checked out the manufacturers' charts, they might seem a little overwhelming. But it really is pretty simple once you understand what's involved in the length of the blade and chainsaw chain.

When you're ready to replace your chain, the first thing to do is determine the size of your chainsaw bar. If you happen to have an Oregon chainsaw, this should be easy. Just check the first two numbers of the ten-digit model number that is stamped on the motor end of the blade. That's your chainsaw bar length.

Don't have an Oregon chainsaw that easily shows you the length of the blade? Then here are some tips for figuring it out yourself.

What's The Best Way To Measure A Chain Saw Blade?

To measure the chainsaw blade itself is simple enough to do. Just put your measuring tape at the end of the bar up against the casing and measure straight down the bar all the way to the tip of the blade.

Blade and bar are two terms that are both used to indicate the same item. This is the blade that extends from the casing of the motor and carries the chain which is what does the sawing for you.

Manufacturers were kind enough to standardize the chainsaw blade lengths into two-inch increments. The most common sizes are 16, 18, and 20 inches although the full range goes from 10 to 42 inches! When you measure your blade, round up to the nearest 2-inch measurement if needed.

Measuring A Chainsaw Chain

To measure the chain on your chainsaw, there are two things you will need to know ... the number of drive links and the pitch of the chain.

A drive link is simply a tooth on the chain and your chain's length is determined by the number of drive links (or teeth). The pitch of the chain also affects the size of the drive links.

The pitch of the chain is important to know as it must match the pitch of both the drive sprocket as well as the bar nose sprocket. This should be stamped on the drive link but if you need to measure the pitch yourself, take the distance between any 3 rivets of the chain and divide by 2.

As an example, a 1/4" pitch chain might have 52 drive links and be 2.17 feet in length, while a 3/8" pitch with 52 drive links would be 3.18 feet in length. So the pitch affects the drive link size which affects your blade's length.

Still unsure? Just check with your chain saw's manufacturer or anyone who makes chains and they will be able to clear up any confusion you may have.

Getting the Most From Your Mini Metal Lathe

!±8± Getting the Most From Your Mini Metal Lathe

After thinking about your next projects, and interests you have decided that you need a metal lathe. After further consideration, you believe that there is no need to invest in a full-size model. A mini-metal lathe looks like a perfect fit.

A mini-lathe metal can be a great buy - but only use when you want the right way and for the purposes of the right. Here are some tips on how most of your mini-metal lathe.

As a "mini"Business

Do not buy a small lathe, just because you want to save a few bucks. There are clear differences in terms of performance and capacity for full-size and mini-lathes. They are designed with different tasks.

One of the quickest ways to ruin a lathe - and a project - is to try to put the tools to work on a smaller job that is best suited for a full-size model.

In a nutshell, do not try to bite off more than you can chew and your mini-metal lathe. If you do this, performance deficiencies will be found and marked the installation of an excessive load on the computer, the shortening of life span.

There's an old saying that bears repeating. "Use the right tools for the job." In this case it means a mini-metal lathe and little effort largest lathe for their purposes accordingly. Do not try unless you really need "to go."

If a mini-lathe is not really responsible for your own projects, buying a larger piece of equipment. Save time andmoney in the long run and you will get better results.

When "Mini" Doesn't Matter

We have discussed the difference between larger lathes and their smaller counterparts. Now, let us consider some important similarities.

Regardless of the tool's size, some things remain constant. You will be working with a powerful tool that is probably capable of 100 RPM or more. You are dealing with metal, moving parts and electricity. That is an extremely potent combination!

That means it is important for you to approach the use of your mini metal lathe with the same level of care and respect you would exhibit when using a super-sized "mangler." You do not want to cut corners in the safety department.

Wear the right equipment. Follow all manufacturer recommendations. Most importantly, take your mini metal lathe seriously. It may be smaller and less intimidating than the giant "finger eaters" you first used in shop class, but they are not much less dangerous.

If you use it the right way and for the right projects, your smaller-sized lathe may rapidly become one of your favorite tools. On the other hand, incorrect use paves a road to failure and frustration. A lack of respect for the power of the tool can result in serious injury.

You need to remember when "mini" matters and when it does not. That understanding is at the very heart of getting the most out of your mini metal lathe.
